History

Historical Background
A WELS' directly predecessor, called A German Evangelical Ministerium of Wisconsin was founded withinside 1850 by many churches in & in the area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Numerous of the early pastors were educated & trained by mission societies inside Germany, and the early churches in the Wisconsin Synod experienced a heavy German background, including services and church business existence conducted around German.

By 1869, a Wisconsin Synod got signed fellowship (therein context, an agreement of a unity of belief) using a Least common multiple to form the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. A Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of Northerly Us was down the road joined per ELS around 1917. A fellowship union involved sharing training facilities & open stump between ministers of the different synods, & it would previous for 92 years.

Withwithin 1917, a Wisconsin Synod joined by using many sister synods in neighboring states, including a Minnesota, Michigan & Nebraska Synods to get a Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. By 1930, a merger & more factors got pushed the WELS to becoming an English speaking synod.

Within 1962, a WELS broke ties using a Least common multiple across a lesson of Christian fellowship. a break was traumatic for a WELS & led a little total of pastors & churches to leave the WELS & form the Church of the Lutheran Confession. Their main complaint was that a WELS misapplied a lesson of Christian fellowship by not breaking sustaining a Synodical Conference & a Lowest common multiple fallowing it experienced publicly recognized doctrinal disagreements. Each denominations remain contradictory on this issue.

When a break, a WELS & a ELS retained fellowship, & prove my point to maintain it. Inside 1993, a ELS & WELS working by having the total of more worldwide Lutheran churches, a few of which got been founded across mission act by each synods, founded a recently fellowship organization, the CELC.

Beliefs and Practice

Core Beliefs
A WELS teaches that a Bible is the simply authoritative source for philosophy. It take a Lutheran Confessions (the Book of Concord) as precise presentations of what Scripture teaches. It teaches that Jesus is a center of Scripture & a merely way to eternal salvation, & that a Holy Spirit utilizes the gospel alone around Word and Sacraments (Baptism and Holy Communion) to bring people to faith around Jesus when Savior & keep the children in this faith, strengthening the two in their every day life of sanctification.

Differences from LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod)
A independent facets of doctrinal difference between WELS & a Lowest common multiple include:

Fellowship — WELS teaches that everthing forms of Christian fellowship necessitate complete unity within matters of philosophy. A Least common multiple, meanwhile, teaches that there are different levels of fellowship among Christians, and then that altar fellowship (sharing in the Eucharist together), pulpit fellowship (exchange of preaching privileges among ministers of various congregations), & more manifestations of Christian fellowship (like fellowship within prayer), come distinct. So, based on data from Lowest common multiple philosophical system, members of different church bodies may locate within greater or even lesser degrees of fellowship based on the extent of their doctrinal disagreement. Doctrine of the ministry — WELS doesn't guess that any particular professional in the church is divinely established. A Least common multiple teaches that a pastoral professional is divinely established, when completely more church agents come man institutions. Role of women in the church — A Least common multiple & WELS agree that Scriptures reserve a pastoral professional for men. Unlike WELS, nevertheless, Lowest comminside multiple teaches that women will choose on roles of lay authority inside the church, like voting in church elections & serving in "humanly established offices" like congregation president, reader, or even member of church councils.

Differences from ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)
Scriptural interpretation — WELS ascribes to a literalist interpretation of a Bible when the elysian & unerring Word of God, when the ELCA has been open to Historical-Critical Methods of Biblical interpretation which seek to realize a scriptures by owning information to historical & social context. Virtually all more specific doctrinal differences between them churches stem from either this overarching disagreement. Creationism — WELS teaches that a account of creation given around Genesis One-Three occurs as factual, historical account, when a ELCA has non enforced an official position, allowing for members to embrace positions ranging from either nonindulgent creationism to Theistic evolution. Sexuality — WELS teaches that extramarital sex & homosexual relations come sins, when a ELCA and its predecessor churches have been somewhat open to multiple viewpoints in these matters. (Although a ELCA welcomes gay in its congregations, further recently it has seen acutely divisions on top a ordination of homophile & a blessing of equivalent-sex unions.) Fellowship — WELS teaches that churches must agree in everthing doctrines of Scripture prior to it might enjoy any form of fellowship using every more, when a ELCA teaches that agreement in everthing aspects of school of thought is non necessarily compulsory as a requirement for fellowship. It so practices fellowship using the handful of more mainline Protestant denominations. Role of women in the church — WELS holds that, based on data from Scripture, women might not help when clergy nor vote inside their congregations, when a ELCA’s threesome predecessor churches began ordaining women into a ministry in the 1970s.

Ecumenical relations
Fellowship between a WELS & more church groups come established exclusively upon investigation & confirmation that each church groups hang on to complete unity around scriptural ism & practice.

A WELS is inside fellowship by using a members of the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference, all of which meet this requirement.
